El Ajenjo Artemisia absinthium, es una planta herbácea nativa de Latinoamérica y de las regiones templadas de Europa y África.
Puede llegar a medir entre 40 y 150 cm de altura, sus hojas son de color verde-azuladas ya que son cubiertas con un vello muy fino de color plata. Sus flores son amarillas y se agrupan en cabezuelas. Las partes que se utilizan son las hojas y las cabezuelas florales.
Su característica principal es su fuerte sabor amargo, que se corresponde con el significado de su nombre: “sin dulzor”.
Destaca por sus propiedades coleréticas, antihelmínticas, analgésicas, antibacterianas y vermífugas.
