El Malvavisco (Althaea officinalis) es también conocida como bismalva y su nombre científico proviene del griego altho que significar curar.
Es una planta erecta de hasta dos metros de alto, recubierta de vellosidad. Sus hojas son triangular-ovales y sus flores colgantes, de color rosa pálido.
Crece en ambientes húmedos, junto a pastizales y pantanos y cerca del mar.
De la planta se cosechan las hojas y las flores, pero es en la raíz de malvavisco donde se concentra su mayor potencial curativo.
